As a typical renaissance town, Vigevano hands down history, art and culture from every stone of its' historical centre. The town fell under the rule of the noble family Della Torre and entered its golden era starting from the XIV century, under the Sforza family becoming ducal city. Nowadays Vigevano has the signs of its beautiful past; the Ducal Square designed by Bramante and also Leonardo, this is one of Italy's most beautiful piazzas. The building of it was instigated by Duke Ludovico il Moro and work began in 1492. Furthermore the Cathedral Museum is worth visiting thanks to its Treasure in which you can admire beautiful things like silver chalices, reliquary and the most beautiful collection of Flemish tapestries. In the very heart of the town the typical building of the XVIII and XIX centuries house smart and prestigious shops and also pretty courtyards and a succession of flats in baroque style. The San Giorgio's little church (X century) is also worth visiting in which you can admire an ancient fresco that illustrates the Saint who defeats the Dragon. You can't forget a visit to the baroque church Santa Maria del Popolo which name doesn't refers to its inhabitants but to the poplars that probably surrounded the church. There is also the Christ's church which is near to the Mulini and Terraggi street which are the last vestiges of the city's walls.
Vigevano is worldwide famous as industrial centre and "capital" of the footwear production, boasts works and here you can visit the unique Italian Footwear Museum which is situated in the Castello Sforzesco on the first floor of the Ducal Stables.The Museum was opened in 1972. The collection currently comprises around 300 shoes and provides a unique look at the history of footwear from three angles: footwear as a part of dress, footwear throw the ages and footwear of different civilisation. In the historical section there are exhibits dating from the XV century to the present day, which belonged to personalities such as Beatrice d'Este, duchess of Milan.
